MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang said on Wednesday that she could not qualify as a political dynasty if Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio decides to throw her hat off as president in the 2022 national elections, given that her father, President Rodrigo Duterte had made known his wishes for his daughter not to run.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said this amid criticism that another Duterte’s succession to the presidency stinks of political dynasty.
“They are parents, but a dynasty is the perpetration of the same family by choice or because of a deliberate decision,” Roque said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel’s Headstart.
He said that, according to the president’s words, there was clearly no intention to perpetuate their family in the seat of power.
“If Mayor Sara shows up, it will be against her father’s will, and I don’t call it a dynasty because clearly the president (said), ‘I don’t want the mess of the presidency on my family.’ But if so, that’s for the electorate to decide. And I don’t think you can accuse the Duterte family of perpetuating themselves in power, because the president made it clear: “I don’t want the presidency for Mayor Sara,” “he added.
Ultimately, it will be the Filipino people who will determine the presidency, Roque said.
“I know the arguments against the dynasties, but it’s a different dynasty, because the father tells the daughter not to show up,” Roque said.
In January this year, Duterte said his daughter was not running for president, reiterating that he had warned the mayor of Davao against running for president.
However, the name of the presidential girl was recently presented as a possible candidate for president in the 2022 election after Albay representative Joey Salceda said there was “no doubt” in his mind that Duterte-Carpio would run for the highest government post in the country. elections next year.
