MANILA, Philippines – Retired Deputy Supreme Court Judge Antonio Carpio of the 1Sambayan Unity Coalition reiterated his group’s position that they cannot accept anyone in President Rodrigo Duterte’s “political dynasty” to run under their banner in the 2022 national elections.

Carpio cited the coalition’s clear and unequivocal position against extrajudicial killings, human rights violations and political dynasties.

“We have made our position clear. We are against extrajudicial killings, we are against the violation of human rights. We are against political dynasties and all of this can be attributed to the president, ”Carpio said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel.

“We cannot be associated with this kind of program, even if it is commendable from their point of view, they admit that it has failed. And of course President Duterte is the head of this political dynasty and therefore we cannot accept anyone within this political dynasty to rule this county again in the next term, ”he added.

Carpio said this includes the presidential daughter and mayor of Davao City, Sara Duterte, who previously criticized the coalition for its supposed “otherism,” a generally derogatory term coined to show the rejection or exclusion of other people. of a certain group.

“They claim to be a coalition of democratic forces but they reject so many of those who disagree with them. They seem authoritarian to me, ”said the presidential girl. The young Duterte – who inherited the post of mayor of Davao City after the latter was elected to the highest political post – claimed she had no intention of following in her father’s footsteps, in the middle the proliferation of campaign materials inviting him to run for president. .

According to Carpio, the Constitution itself prohibits the political dynasty. However, Congress did not pass a law regarding political dynasties.

“We must take a strong position because there are many political dynasties in the provinces, but this one, they will bring the political dynasty to the national level. Right now, by anointing his own daughter as successor, I think it is the pinnacle of political dynasty, that the president will choose his daughter as successor. We cannot allow this to happen, ”said the former SC judge, who is also a known constitutional scholar.

Upon launch, Carpio said 1Sambayan plans to form a single slate of national candidates who would challenge the Duterte administration’s “anointed” in the 2022 national elections.
